Horticultural activities
The Plant Breeding Institute is involved in both amenity and ornamental horticulture with an emphasis on plant breeding.
In amenity, the development of appropriate turf species requiring minimum inputs is our goal. We atre researching and breeding for different turf grass types, ranging from grasses suitable for pasture to grasses suitable for sporting fields.
In ornamental horticulture we have diverse our interest to including breeding Australian native plants for local and international markets. Our primary focus in the early 1990s was breeding for the overseas market with a change in emphasis to local conditions since 2000. This program has been a successful collaboration with Glenfield Nurseries since the late 1980s.
