Plant Breeding Institute
Vision Statement
A leading International centre for Research, Teaching and Services in Plant Breeding
Overview
The Plant Breeding Institute (PBI) was established in 1953 to ensure a continuing University commitment to wheat rust research. Originally based at Castle Hill, the PBI was relocated to the Camden campus and officially opened there in September 1991.
The Institute has three main research areas:
- Cereal Rust covers the rusts of wheat, barley, oats, triticale and rye and the institute internationally recognized for its expertise in this area.
- Plant Breeding covers cereals and pulses and the program is an important component of the pre breeding activities in Australia for cereal breeding groups. The group has a national breeding program in triticale, cold tolerance in rice and projects in Indian mustard.
- Horticulture covers both amenity grasses and ornamental plants, with both programs having a national focus.
