Dhia Al Bakri
Senior Lecturer in Environmental Management
Qualifications
BSc (Mosul University, Iraq)
MSc (Sheffield University, UK)
PhD (Sheffield University, UK)
Personal Profile
Dhia has been with The University of Sydney since 1994. He also held an academic appointment with the University of New England, Australia (Feb. 92-Dec. 93). Prior to this appointment, Dhia held research and management positions at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, KISR (1980-1991).
Dhia was awarded BSc degree majoring in Geology in 1971 from the University of Mosul, Iraq. After graduating, he worked for two years as assistant lecturer in the same university. In 1973, he joined Sheffield University, England, where he completed his MSc and PhD and worked as part-time teaching staff.
Expertise and Research Interests
Dhia has more than 25 years of teaching and research experience in environmental geoscience with application in sustainable land and water management, sustainable rural development and coastal management. This experience has been gained from working in Iraq, UK, Spain, Kuwait, the Arabian Gulf Region and Australia.
Dhia has an established track record of attracting research grants and undertaking research and consultancy to government, industry and community in several countries. His research profile includes the development and implementation of 30 multi-disciplinary research projects with a total budget exceeding $20 million. In these projects, a wide range of environmental problems and resource management issues were investigated and ecologically sustainable solutions or management practices were recommended and applied.
Recent research interests and activities focus on:
- Hydrology and water quality of water supply catchments
- Sediment and nutrient dynamics in inland catchments
- Causes and management of eutrophication and algal blooms in freshwater systems
- Causes and management of dryland salinity
- Sources and management of urban stormwater pollution
- Development and application of the Landscape Genesis approach to sustainable catchment and resource management
- Intertidal ecosystems and integrated coastal management

Teaching
Teaching Philosophy
Dhia's teaching philosophy is based on the belief that deep learning is the most important aspect of the educational process and that teaching should be designed to foster students' learning and their development as professionals and scholars. Teaching should facilitate students' learning regardless of their background, motivation to learn or their mastery of previous subjects. In order to meet the learner's need and desire the teaching process should be student-centered and designed to encourage the learners to pursue life-long learning independently.
Teaching and Research Supervision
At the University of Sydney, Dhia has been actively involved in the curriculum development and teaching of the undergraduate courses: Bachelor of Land and Water Sciences, Bachelor of Land Management; and Bachelor of Rural Resource Management. He was also involved in the development of the Master of Rural Management Studies course. The subjects taught are: Geology and Geomorphology, Water Resource Management, Land Resource Evaluation, Environmental Impact Assessment, Sustainable Land and Water Management, Hydrology and Water Quality, and Research Methods. In 2006, Dhia was the recipient of the Faculty’s Excellence in Teaching Award.
Dhia established a significant research postgraduate program in the area of Land and Water Resource Management at the University of Sydney. Six PhD, three MPhil and 8 Honours research students have been supervised by Dhia in recent years. Research grants attracted by Dhia were used to establish the relevant research infrastructure and to offer APA-equivalent scholarships to attract good quality research students. Prior to his current appointment, Dhia had extensive experience of research supervision within the context of the multi-disciplinary research projects he led during his 11-year appointment with KISR. During this period he was directly responsible for supervising more than 25 research staff who worked on a wide range of environmental and resource management projects.
Publications
Dhia has authored or co-authored in excess of 130 publications and presentations.
